Kirk Gavel : PE

Senior Partner

Mr. Gavel is principal engineer and senior partner of Gavel & Dorn Engineering, PLLC. He has served as project engineer and/or project manager on a wide range of engineering projects in both the public and private sectors, including water supply and distribution system master planning, water plant design and construction, wastewater process studies, wastewater treatment plant construction, and sanitary sewer system planning, design and construction.

Mr. Gavel has varied experience with the construction of municipal engineering projects, serving in the role of construction administration engineer, resident engineer, and inspector, on over $250 million of construction. He has provided special inspection services as an engineer and as an inspector on projects ranging from pump stations to restaurants.

He has provided technical support for soils and geotechnical engineering projects and for construction quality assurance testing on projects ranging from pipelines to airport construction. He is a registered engineer in North and South Carolina and Georgia, and is a licensed general building and public utilities contractor in North Carolina.

Jason Dorn : PHD, PE

Dr. Dorn is a water resources engineer with over 13 years of progressive professional experience in various aspects of planning and design of sanitary sewer collection system projects with an emphasis on computer modeling, pressure/flow monitoring data analysis, and sanitary sewer rehabilitation.

After receiving his doctorate in civil engineering from North Carolina State University in December 2004, he served as a post-doctoral research associate in the university’s Civil Engineering Department working on “Modeling and Optimization of Civil Engineering Infrastructure.”

The research included the development of an “expert system” to automate the planning and design of sanitary sewer systems, developing design and cost models, and developing optimization algorithms. Dr. Dorn is a registered professional engineer in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Mr. Mayo is a partner of Gavel & Dorn Engineering and is a civil engineer with extensive experience in land development engineering, water and sewer pipeline design, and earthen dam rehabilitation. He is skilled in the preparation of design documents and the obtaining of associated permits.

His land development design experience includes site layout, roadway horizontal and vertical alignment, water and sanitary sewer utilities, grading, erosion and sedimentation control, storm water drainage, and storm water management.

Mr. Mayo has completed projects in multiple jurisdictions throughout North and South Carolina and Georgia. Mr. Mayo has assisted on the design and construction of recent projects for UNCC and local municipalities. He is able to understand and interpret rules and regulations administered by government agencies regarding building and design standards.

Eric Medaugh : PE

Mr. Medaugh is a partner of Gavel & Dorn Engineering, PLLC and  civil engineer with extensive experience in geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, and water and sewer pipeline construction. He adds valuable structural engineering expertise for residential construction projects. He is a versatile member of our team with experience encompassing many aspects of the civil engineering world.

He has served as the resident project representative (RPR) on multiple water and wastewater treatment plant projects where he has performed special inspections in addition to typical RPR duties. Mr. Medaugh has been involved with the design and construction of large and small diameter water and sewer pipe as well as stormwater projects including earthen dam evaluation and repair.

Mr. Medaugh has managed the construction materials testing (CMT) division of the company and been the radiological safety officer (RSO) since 2012. He has performed multiple geotechnical subsurface investigations for proposed pipelines and buildings. Mr. Medaugh also has experience with smoke testing, flow monitoring, CCTV review, CIPP lining projects, he is a NASSCO certified inspector, stormwater BMP certified and a licensed home inspector.
